Summer is one of the most exciting times of the year — but it can also be one of the most challenging seasons for your skin. After 17 years as a licensed esthetician, I’ve seen the same patterns every single year: women come to me in June with dull, uneven, dehydrated skin wondering why their winter routine stopped working. The answer is simple: summer skin has different needs. You don’t need a complicated overhaul. You just need to know the five things your skin is asking for right now — and how to give them to it.
01
Most people think hydration and moisture are the same thing. They’re not — and this distinction matters more in summer than any other season.
Moisture refers to the oil content in your skin. Hydration refers to the water content. In summer, heat and air conditioning both strip water from your skin, leaving it dehydrated even if it feels oily. Dehydrated skin overproduces oil to compensate, which leads to breakouts, shine, and a dull, flat appearance.
What your skin needs is a humectant — an ingredient that draws water into the skin and holds it there. Look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera in your serum or moisturizer. Apply your hydrating serum to damp skin right after cleansing to lock in maximum moisture.
ESTHETICIAN’S RULE
“If your skin feels tight after washing, it’s dehydrated — not dry. Add a hydrating serum before your moisturizer, not instead of it.”
Summer sun is beautiful, but UV exposure is the number one trigger for hyperpigmentation and dark spots — especially for women with deeper skin tones. Even if you wear SPF, the cumulative effect of sun exposure throughout the season can darken existing spots and create new ones.
This is why I always tell my clients: summer is the season to brighten, not just protect. The three ingredients I trust most:
These three ingredients are the foundation of the Lumis Brightening Line, and they work synergistically — more effective together than any one of them alone.

Real client result. Individual results may vary.
ESTHETICIAN’S RULE
“Start your brightening routine before peak sun season, not after. Prevention is always easier than correction.”
Dead skin cells accumulate faster in summer. Sweat, sunscreen, and increased oil production all contribute to a buildup that blocks your products from penetrating and leaves your complexion looking dull and congested.
But here’s where most women go wrong: they over-exfoliate. Harsh scrubs and daily exfoliation strip the skin’s protective barrier, leaving it vulnerable to sun damage and sensitivity.
What you want is consistent, gentle exfoliation two to three times per week. The Lumis Kojic Acid Exfoliating Pads do double duty — they exfoliate dead skin cells while simultaneously delivering brightening benefits to fade dark spots and even skin tone.

ESTHETICIAN’S RULE
“Always follow exfoliation with SPF the next morning. Freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to UV damage.”
SPF protects your skin from UV rays, but it doesn’t protect against free radicals — unstable molecules generated by sun exposure and pollution that break down collagen and accelerate aging.
Antioxidants neutralize free radicals before they can cause damage. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea extract, and turmeric are all powerful options. Apply an antioxidant serum in the morning before your SPF for a second layer of defense your sunscreen alone cannot provide.
ESTHETICIAN’S RULE
“Vitamin C and SPF are a power couple. Apply Vitamin C first, let it absorb, then apply SPF on top. Together they provide significantly better protection than either one alone.”
This is the one most people overlook, and it’s the most important of all.
The difference between women who have consistently glowing skin and women who struggle is rarely the products they use. It’s the consistency with which they use them. Your skin responds to patterns. When you cleanse, treat, and protect your skin at the same time every morning and evening, your skin learns to regulate itself.
A random routine keeps your skin in a constant state of adjustment. It never gets the chance to truly transform. This is exactly why I created the Get Summer-Ready Skin in 7 Days Digital Guide — a simple, intentional morning and evening ritual that you can actually stick to.
ESTHETICIAN’S RULE
“Consistency beats intensity every time. A simple routine done daily will always outperform an elaborate routine done occasionally.”
Your face isn’t the only place that needs brightening attention before summer. Underarms, knees, elbows, inner thighs, and the bikini area are all prone to hyperpigmentation from friction, shaving, and the natural folding of skin at joints. These patches are incredibly common, completely normal, and very treatable.
The same brightening trio that works on your face works beautifully on your body:
The Lumis Brightening Face & Body Set was designed to work from head to toe — so every inch of skin you’re putting on display this summer feels even, smooth, and confident.

ESTHETICIAN’S RULE
“Start treating body hyperpigmentation at least 4–6 weeks before you want to see results. Apply to damp skin after your shower for maximum absorption.”
